A Hard Frost

This morning we woke to the sparking white glaze of a hard frost over our grass and other plants. Late autumn is here and the end of the 2025 market season is Thursday. There is still so much to accomplish before the heavy frost gives way to blankets of snow.

Preparation for spring begins now as the pace of the year begins to slow; last minute projects to put our best foot forward in the spring. I have a composter that is mostly loaded, a grow room that is being cleaned and reconfigured. Straw that needs purchasing, so that animals remain cozy over the winter months. I have garden pathways to over sow with clover. The work is always there, but frantic beat is transitioning to a gentle rhythm.

The cycle of the seasons was something lost on me when I lived in the south. Here in the mitten state, they are more pronounced. They remind me that, like the earth, I need to take time to rest, rejuvenate, and rebuild before the spring. The chill in the air help me to reaclimate to the cold that is coming and I welcome the shorter days and hibernation they bring.
